travelling books

August 22, 2009

The title of yesterday’s post, Blue Highways, refers to a book by William Least Heat Moon.  Older maps showed the new Interstates in red and the smaller back roads – the roads that actually went through towns – in blue.  The author travelled these older roads, met and photographed the people he met there, hoping to find something he was missing.

When I talked about how much I liked this book, a friend recommended Travels with Charley, by John Steinbeck.

Both are wonderful travel books about the open road at particular times in America – not guide books – books about being a traveller, being open to new experiences, about meeting people where they live, and taking note of what makes the individual – and a place – special.

These are books about how the journey changes a person – if you let it.

Other (non-fiction) travelling books I like:

Eat Pray Love, by Elizabeth Gilbert

Without Reservations, by Alice Steinbach

Under the Tuscan Sun, by Frances Mayes

What are your favourites travel books?
