fear and adventure
The SCBWI writers’ conference is tomorrow. W’hoo! I’ve been looking forward to this for months – years, even.
This weekend, this time, is for me. Carving out this time was something I knew I had to do – with an axe if necessary. Fortunately, I didn’t have to go to such extremes. My family has been very supportive of my writing, especially the current project. So. Off to the conference.
Oh dear. The introvert in me is quaking.
When I talked to my mother this morning, she asked if I was ready for the weekend, knowing I’d be thinking twice about what I’m getting myself into.
“Well, my dear, who wants a dull adventure?”
She’s right about that.
And then I confessed my fears. “They won’t like me. I won’t know what to say. I’m not ready. I’ll be overwhelmed before the first day is out.”
And then she said very gently, “It wouldn’t be an adventure if you weren’t a little bit afraid…”
She knows me well.
